As a site of cultural production, the alternative gallery exists/functions somewhere between that of an isolated island in the middle of the ocean, and the archipelago, linked through proximity to other similar sites and social circles.
As eight individuals, ADDS DONNA functions as a small archipelago within this greater cultural one, using the site of Manifest Exhibitions to expound upon the metaphor. In thinking about the “desert island”, one tends to think about the list of things they couldn’t live without. Starting from various lists generated individually, ADDS DONNA will transform the space of Manifest where these lists may be interpreted as found and constructed objects and forms, allowing larger relationships to form as idiosyncratic decisions collide within the physical space.
The true “desert island” exists only in fiction and the imagination, for once a place is discovered, named, mapped it no longer exists in oblivion. It may be a site where self-reliance is manifested, but also where there may be no audience, no one with which to exchange dialogue. Within an archipelago however, you may look out on the horizon and see not an endless ocean, but rather other lands of possibility that are within reach.
